Rockledge Model Railroad Museum Jenkintown PA
The Rockledge Model Railroad Museum is located at the corner of Montgomery and Sylvania Avenues. It is home to the Greater Abington Township Society of Model Engineers and is housed in a historic textile mill building. The club was formerly located in Fort Washington, but relocated to its current location in 2014.
Currently the centerpiece of the museum is a 3,000 square foot walk through HO scale model railroad depicting the 1950s era with sections of PRR and Reading lines. Over 900 feet of main line track is operational with trains running on open house dates.
In the meantime, GATSME is working on several other exhibits. Some of these will be focusing on the textile industry that thrived in the area.
GATSME is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that provides its members with the opportunity to build and display a wide range of model railroads. They also offer educational activities and help promote the hobby of model railroading.
Since 1952, the club has built grand railroad scenes for pleasure and education. The organization has 35 members and recently purchased an industrial building in Rockledge.
The club is a member of the National Model Railroad Association and hosts half a dozen local meetings each year. These events feature presentations on modeling techniques, contests and visits to individual model railroads.
There is also a club shop where members can purchase model train sets and related items. There is a full-size model train layout and two smaller models in addition to an assortment of locomotives and cars.
Besides the train layout, the museum is home to several other exhibits that showcase historical trains and related railroad equipment. This includes a HO scale railroad, an On30 layout and a narrow gauge railway.
If you are interested in learning more about model trains or would like to see how they are operated, stop by the museum on a second Saturday of the month from noon to 3 PM. Admission is by donation.
The Rockledge Model Railroad Museum is a great place to learn about the history of model trains and how they influenced the development of the region. It is also a fun and interesting place for children to visit.
You can also enjoy a hike or bike ride at Rockledge Park. It has large open green spaces and shaded areas, as well as a gazebo and paved paths. It also serves as the beginning of a 6.2-mile Pennypack trail that is accessible for walking, jogging and biking.
