Set on six acres in Chestnut Hill, Woodmere Art Museum is an art lover’s paradise. Aside from the amazing permanent collection, which has over 8,000 works of art from Philadelphia’s most famous artists, there are many other activities to enjoy including family programs, tours, lectures, music, film, and more.
A visit to Woodmere is worth the drive from Center City, even if you aren’t much of a museum person. It is a quiet and relaxing place, and the entry fee is only $10. Plus, they offer free admission on Sundays.
The museum has a nice collection of 19th century landscape paintings and some contemporary pieces as well. It is also a good place to visit if you’re interested in learning about Philadelphia’s unique brand of modernism and the artists who made it famous.
There’s a special exhibition at the Woodmere Art Museum this season that is definitely worth checking out before it is over. Merry and Bright is a collection of vintage and contemporary Christmas treasures that is sure to bring some cheer into your holiday season.
A Sculpture You’ll Love to Look At
One of the main reasons why I went to the museum is because they have Harry Bertoia’s monumental fountain sculpture on display which is a real treat to look at. It’s actually a pretty amazing piece of work that isn’t too large for its own good and is well worth a walk around to see it.
Another great part of the museum is their outdoor sculpture collection which has a wide variety of pieces to explore and take in. There’s also a great outdoor area for seating if you are looking to relax and enjoy the weather.
You’ll find a lot of different artists at this museum, and they do a great job of telling the story of their work. They have many different exhibitions to check out so there is always something new to see.
The museum also has many art classes for children and adults to try out. They have different classes every week so you’re sure to find something that is suitable for you.
Some of the classes you’ll want to try out include painting, pottery, and drawing. Some of the more advanced classes will have you doing a project that involves multiple mediums and will require a lot of thinking on your part to get it right.
A lot of the teachers are very talented and have a lot of experience so you’ll be sure to learn a thing or two from them. You’ll also be sure to meet some really interesting people.
I have visited this museum twice now and both times have been really great experiences. The staff is very friendly and the entrance is easy to find. There is a nice gift shop as well so you can pick up some trinkets and other stuff.
They also have a podcast that you can listen to as well. They have free admission on Sunday’s which makes it even more affordable to come.
